Sometimes a piece of music’s whole purpose can be to faithfully capture the essence of a futile moment. And this is precisely what NITCH have managed to accomplish with “This Was Never Meant to End Like This”. An emotionally laden EP consisting of two tracks, “Endless” and “At The Gates”, adding up to 16 minutes of nostalgic rock reminiscent of the good old 90s. This power-trio’s sentimental guitar-driven songs compel listeners to embark on a wistful voyage to simpler times. Helio Reguera’s sentimental wails, both on vocals and on guitar, evoke sadness and torment, yet with a soothing quality to appease the longing and yearning-afflicted soul.
Not only does their emo alt-rock evoke bygone and forever lost golden sunsets in which time stood still, but even its release is a rare bird today. In current times in which the cult to newness seems to be stronger than ever, NITCH’s latest work is a refreshing tale of patience and simmering. Although these two songs were first recorded in 2017, and composed way before, it has taken the better part of three years for them to see their release. Why? Self-production always entails many difficulties, time constraints and endless revisions. And life will almost always get in the way, forcing members to move to other parts of the world in their pursuit of better opportunities.
However, self-production can also be one of the most rewarding activities a creative mind can set itself to. And fulfillment is palpable in “This Was Never Supposed to End Like This”. It may seem like a farewell EP from the Barcelona-based band, and it might no have had to end like that, but it certainly had to sound like this. Their sound is raw, yet refined; Reguera on guitar is able to spawn both chunky walls of distortion and overdrive and delicate sparkles of shimmering strings, while Bruno Camponesco and Victor Cruz, on drums and bass respectively, follow and escort him on any unbeaten trail he chooses to venture on.
With “This was never meant to end like this”, NITCH deliver yet again a timeless and honest piece of work which will connect with listeners in search of authentic and visceral alt-rock imbued with kraut, emo, and pop sensibility.
